Laurie SPIEGEL (USA) makes new, unusual
and obscure music. She started doing electronic music at
the end of the 1960s and computer music in the early
70s. Laurie Spiegel released several LPs, CDs and sound
tracks. In addition to electronic and computer music,
she releases also her not-too-hard solo pieces for piano
and classical guitar dedicated to private musicians who
like to sight read or just play music at home. Laurie
Spiegel co-edited THE EAR-Magazine along with Beth
Anderson back in the late 1970s. P-ART |

Artistic Statement If I were to count the amount of time I've spent playing music for people and the amount spent playing for dogs, I'd bet the ratio would be astonishing.
Between my own dogs during the years I lived alone and the amount of time my neighbors are not home but their dogs are, it's got to be quite a lot more than for people.
If I had realized sooner who my basic audience really would be, would I have composed my music differently?
If I had never lived with dogs, would my music have been different overall?
If they could, what music would my dogs have sung me? What a stupid question!
Dogs have always sung me all kinds of doggy music and have sung along with mine too from time to time.
I wish I could hear like a dog, if only for a few minutes, to experience their level of hearing, so far beyond our own in acuity.

An Intelligent Instrument 1986-1997 by Laurie Spiegel for Atari ST, Amiga and Macintosh computers Music Mouse is a software music instrument that tries to let you interact with musical sound as directly and intuitively as any traditional instrument. It's not an editor, sequencer, or sound processor, nor does it use music notation. Music Mouse provides a realtime interactive human interface to a model of music theory that is optimized for musicality of output in the ear of its creator, a professional composer.
Music Mouse is a program designed for those interested in exploring sound with improvisation. The computer becomes a music instrument of sorts with the mouse controlling harmony and melody and the typewriter keyboard offering controls for changing musical properties. Music Mouse provides real-world music experiences with freedom to experiment with aestetic choices.
Music Mouse is designed to provide flexibility of style, from New Age prettiness to atonal Viennese angst.
Like any other musical instrument, its users and uses range widely, from absolute beginners to established professionals. People use Music Mouse for live performances, cd recordings, film soundtracks, dance accompaniment, compositional brainstorming, in music education pre-school through post-grad, for music therapy in hospitals and prisons, and for self-expression, relaxation, and pleasure.Music Mouse Today — A Modern Revival In 2026, Laurie Spiegel collaborated with Eventide to bring Music Mouse back to today's computers. The new release preserves the original concept of an intelligent, real-time musical instrument while adding support for modern macOS and Windows systems, improved MIDI connectivity, a redesigned interface and new performance features.
Nearly forty years after its first release, Music Mouse continues to inspire composers, improvisers and electronic musicians as one of the earliest and most influential algorithmic music instruments ever created.
