What are POCKET SAMPLERS / DJ-SAMPLER ?

Go to basics: THE ART OF SAMPLING

PRACTISING: LEVEL 1
SAMPLE AS A DJ!

GO TO LEVEL 2

Do it on your own. Or, trust your friends, and sample together.

Put your CD-player on the right track point where you like to start sampling. Consider very well where the sound fragment exactly is on the CD to lose no time and to work without frustration.

Or, if you prefer the adventure of making samples: pick up samples unprepared and randomly from your unselected origine. This approach is funny and preferable if you still control the DJ- sampler.

HOW to sample?

In the DJS- sampler, your maximum amount of sample time (MONO) is 126 seconds, depending on your RAM memory (2,4 or 8mb ) and on the selected sample rate (44,1 kHz / 32 kHz / 22 kHz) .

Choose the DJS-modus. Or, press REC and MODE (DJS) together.

Choose BANK A. Now you dispose eight sample locations: A1-A8.

1. Press REC and wait.

2. Press empty place e.g. A3 (---): if NOT empty, press REC and A3 together= DELETE and wait. There you are: A3= ---.

If you like to erase all samples: 1. Press REC; 2. Press REC + CLEAR BANK A; 3. REC + CLR bank A= BANK A memory is DELETED.

3. Press A3= sampling is starting: Seconds are decreasing now on the display.

4. Stop the sampling act: press again A3 = the sample switches to the PLAY modus: listen the recorded sample.

PRACTISING: LEVEL 2
DJ-SAMPLE SONATE

1. The sample-TEAM selects eight favorite fragments by listening , only about one - two seconds per sample. Make your nomination per team.

LEVEL 2.2: If you repeat LEVEL 2, I recommand now to select different soundscapes from different CDs: melodical, rhythmical, solo, full orchestra, pop, folk, instrumental, vocal samples.

LEVEL 2.3: If one of the DJ-sample team can sing a fragment of 2 seconds, I recommand to record this live performance, using a microphone connected to an audio mixer.

2. Fill the sample BANK A ( => SAMPLER AS A DJ). Look at level 1(=back to TOP)

3. Press sample button A1, then A2 etc.

4. Check the result and re-sample, if correction is necessary.

5. Play the 8 samples in a randow sequence e.g. A4- A1 - A7 -A7 - A5 - etc. This playback would be a testcase for your taste of musical choice.

6. Write down the numbers of one musical sequence that the sample-team keeps.

7. Try out more sample loops or riffs and write down the distinguous lines of numbers in this sample-sonate.

8. IF SOLO PLAY: practise the sample-score on your own. Search for audience.

IF GROUP: practise with 8 forefingers of all members together and play a full polyphonic sample sonate (4-voices polyphony). REMEMBER: LESS is MORE.

9. The following days, you can perform and record sophisticated versions of your DJ-team using the same sample-bank, or with new samples in the A-BANK. Save all PLAY versions on tape or on your music computer.

Discuss the polyphonic and monophonic results. What's the winner DJS- sonate?
