About fifteen years ago, I started editing Mirage-samples with OASIS (Atari ST) from Hybrid Arts. The next step to load and control multisamples of my Mirage, was "SOUNDPROCESS", the alternative operating system for the MIRAGE 8-bit sampler (Ensoniq). It was in those days a fascinating feeling to combine sampling and synthesis in one module: the Mirage DSK8. However, Mirage has good soundperformances on its own, but it's a very time consuming art to manipulate all parameters on the Mirage-display. I worked out my personalized design to display all sampling parameters of SOUNDPROCESS.

At those days I was inspired by the wonderful Soundprocess editor available on Macintosh. S P V E (93-95) is designed by Barry Kirsch (US) and lets you control all features of the SOUNDPROCESS on Mac computer screen , you enter a full waves based synthesizer that can read and store up to 72 personal waves, organize 48 patches and stored in one sound bank on disk. In fact, the Mirage is a versatile software based 8-bit computer that can be utilized by more than only the original sampling operating system from Ensoniq. In the early nineties "Soundprocess" was the only reason for me to enter the Macintosh platform for editing samples and control keyboardmaps (different maps of splits and layers). Last version is SPVE 1.0beta13 (for contact click> B.Kirsch).
At the moment, I utilize the very stable and handy sample editor PEAK 2 for Macintosh to prepare samples and multisamples ready for use in multisampling boards. (see next page)

Music painter program for Atari ST only (Soft Arts, Germany) can transfer graphical paintings into MIDI-notes and viceversa.

The graphic composer program of Prof. G.Mazzola (CH) is the second generation version of the innovative music computer software PRESTO 2.01 (for Atari). This program is much more than an alternate SMF- sequenzer.
With PRESTO you can screen the graphic representation of all SMF - compositions; you can cut and paste from and within the graphic score; you can make alterations and powerful transformations from recorded MIDI pieces in the local score, you can influence all musical parameters grafically, including ethnical tuning scales and dynamic tempo curves. Presto is available for free at the very appreciated Tim Conrardy 's website: http://tamw.atari-users.net

MAX for Macintosh is a real-time MIDI processing and graphic programming environment, originally programmed at IRCAM. MAX (actual version 4 distributed by OPCODE) can control, create and improvise MIDI music within the limits of graphic algorithms, etc.

Music Mouse for Atari, Mac and Amiga, the mother of all music mouses is developed by Laurie Spiegel (< click).

DIABLO (for Atari ST) is programmed by Frank Baldé (STEIM, NL). DIABLO is based on a simple idea: creating music by drawing on the computer screen. Diablo is an alternative MIDI controller for Atari ST. The basic way to use the program is to drag the mouse in the Gesture window and use your left hand on the computer keyboard to change the screen controls. Diablo is not a drawing program, but rather a MIDI controller that gives you visual feedback of the mouse gestures that produce music. You can control up to 16 different MIDI synthesizers. You can record the music you create and play it back, introducing automatic variations. You can create artwork in other graphic programs and then watch and listen to Diablo's interpretation of your image.

MIDIJOY (for ATARI ST) is programmed by a computer minded pianist and music programmer Harry Koopman (MARSAN Production, Smaragd 2, NL - 1703 GB Heerhugowaard ). Midijoy is a very sophisticated and graphical improviser program. Using the computer keyboard and dragging the mouse, you master the output of multitimbral MIDI-keyboards and modules, alternate tone scales and all MIDI parameters. You can allocate funny grooves and patterns to the mouse pointer (X,Y) within self created tuning scales. You can save and reproduce your mouse movements. The FREEWARE updated version 3.51 is available at : http://tamw.atari-users.net
GRAPHIC COMPOSER This new graphical orientated composer tool for musicians for Macintosh users, is released by Jürgen LANGE in 1999 (Version 1.1) in the Studio für elektronischen Musik of the Hochschule für Musik, Dresden. Graphic composer is a further step in the integration (Mididraw, Music Mouse, Presto2, Midijoy) and flexibility of graphic input and editing musical converted data. Homepage: http://www. hfmdd.de.

The innovative algorithmic composer software from multimedia artist Prof. Wolfgang M. STROH (Oldenburg, Germany), is programmed for Atari ST and gives you access to graphic input/output of musical patterns programmed in Omikron Basic (Educational MIDI-Publisher = Musiklabor, Kleine Str.8, D-38116 Braunschweig fax +49 531577843).
Recently, Wolfgang Martin Stroh offers a special algorithmic package for Atari ST for free through Tim Conrardy's impressive website for MIDI-users with Atari ST computers. http://tamw.atari-users.net/algo.htmAbout 27 programs in all!
I have found the converter key of Omikron Basic for the Atari FALCON platform. Very recently, OmikronBasic is crossgraded to the Macintosh platform. (BERKHAN SOFTWARE Germany: http://www.berkhan.com)
Graphic patterns of pitches, grooves, tuning scales etc. are growing while the sequencer program ist in process.
The most innovative machine composing software is AUTOBUSK (Clarence Barlow). (click and go to the P-ART Journal #20 and #21).
Sound shapES (freeware for Mac only OS 9) is a small application that takes any music played into the SOUND IN port / internal CDplayer/ built -in microphone of the computer) and produces mesmeric patterns on the screen of the MAC.
MEGALOMANIA for Macintosh (only OS9) is an easy and powerful MIDI-software controller for multisplits, keyboard maps and effects.
