MORPHING SOUND

Scroll down and explore the pink land.

1.From image to sound gesture

Look at this non-figurative image.

What sort of energy, emotion or feeling do you experience while observing the picture from left to right? Languor? Lethargy? Nervousness? Tranquility? Peace?

Let the weakness of the rosy (lilac/inflamed) gradation impress your mind and motion. Take your fav instrument, or take a single sound object which you prefer to link to the picture. Look for the adjusted timbre (pitch), soft sounds. Remember your sound gesture and repeat.

Click here and explore the instrumental gallery to facilitate your choice.

2.Morphing

Divide the following image in two parts: left and right. Find for the same instrument two appropriate timbres: e.g. very light sound (on the left) to heavy pink timbre (on the right). Perform the gradual progression. First, experiment the complete progression in about 5 seconds (X). Then, play X in slow motion (about 2 minutes).

Divide the left side in two parts. Play the very light sound sample, and make it a little more rosy. Repeat your sound gestures.

Divide the right part of the full picture in two parts, and derive a sweet version of the most lilac sound version. Remember and execute different sound gestures separately. So you 'll get at least four differences within the same sound matrix.

Please, keep this task in mind and look at the picture to explore intuitively and refresh the progression of your sound texture.

Coda

First, invite two or more friends ( or members of your class) to do the same as mentioned above.

Let everyone practise their "morphing" act separately, without interaction with other players.

Finally, record the performance together without a tryout. Please concentrate on your own part, and keep your interpretation of progression in timbre. Stay alert, and discuss the recorded version.

"MORPHING SOUND" brings you to understand and experience the issue of transferring colors and emotions into sound (timbre), and to enjoy the power of sound progression in time. At the same time, you are familiarized with the "morphing" feature in the modern world of synthesizer, sampler and hi-tech modulation.
