FIRENZE (Florence)
NEW EPICENTRE FOR MUSIC EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION
Centro Studi Musica
& Arte
Project of the Theatre of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino
in collaboration with the Centro Studi Musica & Arte
How can parents bring the fundamental aspects of e.g. Verdi's Aida to their young children
in the operahouse?
"Don't them let creeping and crawling onto the velvet chairs near their proud parents
to interrupt the full opera performance after a time of patience.
Please, don't tell children the entire story or all associations and intrigues in the piece.
Keep them apart from the real performance for adults.
Let children understand and enjoy the basical human aspects of the casting only by playing
and experiencing within the group while they listen to the main music themes," says
Fiorella Cappelli who searched and found a formula working succesfully with the children
in the operahouse of Florence.

At the ESCOM (European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music) Conference
(Liège 5-8 April 2002) the Florence's CENTRO STUDI MUSICA & ARTE introduced
some novel and innovative projects for alternative music education.
The "Ludoteca Musicale" is a project of this Centre of Study
in Music and Arts designed and directed by Fiorella Cappelli and Stefania Di Blasio.
This plays ( (Via Pandolfini, 18, Florence, Italy) is an active sound paradise
(with 3 levels, from age 0 to 11) full of multi-sensorial interaction
between children and a powerful exploration on sound objects, sound machines,
ethnic instruments, and last but not least a selection of educational
music computer programs (Jungles, Sound Puzzle, Metasynth, Melody Mixup,
Midisaurus Rhythm, etc.) in the "Laboratorio Musicale di Informatica".

TEMPO REALE

New computer tools
for interactive music education
Inspired indirectly by Ircam (Paris) and the GRM (Bourges), remembering the french mouvement "Eveil musical",
and based on the actual power of computer programming with music software MAX (for Macintosh computers),
the team of TEMPO REALE (Florence, Italy) developes an original and useful set of high-tech music programs
(e.g. Megomax). On an active and modern way, we learn children and young people to detect sound structures,
to produce and perform personal music with pleasure, and without stress.
The users manipulate waves / samples on a very intuitive and easy way, to create new personal
sound universes by editing and learning all structural aspects and parameters (pitch, duration, timbre, texture,
styles, sequences, etc.) on a progressive way.
Jacobo Baboni-Schilingi : " We constantly update our tools from the practise on schools.
We need feedback of all participants to release and distribute real and interactive tools.
Originally, Tempo Reale is a non-profit organisation started by Luciano Berio who claims to actualize and democratize
activities and musical development for all."
