Explore your sound laboratory:
1. Compare e.g. the little
two shakers
There are two small jars (please close them!)
in front of your sound laboratory box.
The one on the right is a plastic one.
Shake it. Then, shake the glass one(left hand).
Does the sound differ?

Put the same and other sound objects in the longe tube (see
at right of the sound labo): explore and experiment to influence
the pitch or the color.
2. The art of timbre
For all sounds, timbre is the full spectrum of a tone (pitch)
with its 16 audible parts (harmonics/overtones).
Shake the little glass jar. Explore why you can produce two
different timbres with the same content. Look at all compartments
of the sound lab, put other contents in the little jar and shake.
Write down your observation to remember
or check your experiences.
As a sound-man, you will explore all
compartments of the soundbox now.
Don't forget (after use) to put back
all little sound objects in their right place.
3. From timbre to rhythm
Pick up some seashells, and shake them: just for fun. The
sounds produced by the seashells in your hands are interesting
only for their rhythmical aspect. When does the timbre morph
into rhythm ? Why?
4. Sound cocktail on sound board
Look for surrounding surfaces to move and put the seashells
on. Let the seashells dance on the surface. Combine all compartments
of the sound lab and make a fascinating cocktail of timbres and
rhythms.
