The belgian François LOUIS invented a new woodwind instrument: the aulochrome, derived from aulos (principal instrument of the ancient Greeks consisting of two identical reed flutes), and from chrome (chromatic).
The 'chromatic aulos' is a chromatic polyphonic woodwind instrument: it combines two soprano saxophones using a revolutionary mechanism that provides playing the keys of both flutes, either seperately or together. Each interval can be taken chromatically, from the lowest note on one flute to the highest on the other. The two holes of the mounthpiece have a different size, what means that the two pipes sound differently. The sound result is unique, and offers new possibilties to the aelochrome-player.
