The Japanese flute made from the root end of the bamboo stalk is the shakuhachi always been primarly associated with individual ritual behavior and personal meditation: it is said the "way of examining oneself with the bamboo". Some of the samurai warriors during the Edo period (1600s---1800s) also played shakuhachi as a part of their "soft" side as opposed to their "rough" side as warriors. In the 1600s there is a tradition from a sect of Buddhist monks who took vows of notingness (early Zen Buddism), symbolized by wearing baskets over their heads, as seen in the picture.
Of course, you don't have to take the vows of a samurai or a Buddhist monk playing shakuhachi and enjoying the 3D- experience of dynamic and harmonics. A headphone still creates exclusive conditions for listening registered music. When you still take an ordinary paper bag or sounding "basket" over your head, you still create wonderful worlds of playing flute and sound objects in the "personal" area. Enter the world of space and sound.
