ART
Bertrand LAVIER (F) painted traffic signs. I like "Composition No 101", the red triangle (upside down) on canvas.
Is this work an artificial imitation of reality or is it real art? Painting a banal everyday object provoces a desorientation of aestetic perception: the viewer may catch himself suddenly judging the window according to formal and structural aspects and he finds himself faced with the question of what turns an painted trafic sign into a work of art. Is it inherent to the object itself or merely an external mechanism of presentation?
The poetic art of Bertrand Lavier doesn't belong to the new realism movement because it 's a very raw joke about the function of art versus reality.
