THE NATIVE COLLECTION OF P-ART

"Playing as a man of fifty thousand years ago"

In the darkness of the night I enjoy to play the MBIRA, a thumb piano from Zimbabwe.

I perfectly understand Jean DUBUFFET (1901-1985) when he said:

"In my music I wanted to place myself in the position of a man of fifty thousand years ago, a man who ignores everything about western music and invents a music for himself without any reference, whitout any discipline, without anything that would prevent him express himself freely and for his own good pleasure."

Yes, dear Jean, I do.

Of course, dear anthropologists, sociologists and psychologists, I know that it's impossible to cut down my western roots of music socialisation. However, my way to play MBIRA as a pure sounding toy, refreshes my ears and mind everytime, to listen basically towards the authentic sound qualities, and to practice conventional western instruments in this way.

My ethnic affection results in a continuously growing collection of native instruments.

Only when I am totally confident about the sound qualities of the desired instrument, I shall buy it.

Currently I have collected different types of ethnic instruments from all over the world:
an Indian baya and tabla drumset, several lutes and fiddles from Southeast Asia, Latin America and North Africa, a cora (guitar) from Cameron, an Arabic trumpet, different flutes from Central America, African thump pianos (two sensas from Ruanda/ one mbira from Zimbabwe), a marimba from Guatemala, a portable balaphone (marimba) from Cameron used for weddings, different small percussion instruments, sunchimes and handbells from Tibet and other locations over the whole world.

There is more.

Since many years I have been selecting, buying and collecting - with the same authentic attitude -  sound objects: natural instruments picked up from the daily life environment and which I use for experiments, sound samples, tape compositions and creative sound landscapes.
