Due to his calling and training, the traditional Shaman occupies himself with uncommon or consciousness changing conditions.
Ideally, the Shaman represents the integration of religion with art and healing.
As a medium between everyday reality and other reality levels, he leads the rituals for groups of humans: he is a priest / soul counsellor.
As healer the Shaman provides health: he appears as an advisor or social guide, and often shifts himself into an uncommon mental condition, in order to heal.
This situation is related also to his role as an artist. He makes magic rock drawings, masks, fetishes etc.. Originally, the activation of the artistic forces serves the self-healing of the shaman-in-training, and then the therapeutic care of the tribe. Reciting, singing, dancing and acting, the shaman arranges his self-reflection and the history of the tribe.
